64 persons arrested for violating environmental law in Ondo

No fewer than 64 persons were arrested by the Ondo State Government for violating environmental law in Odo Ijoka, Akure, the State capital.

It was gathered that the violators were apprehended after for obviously neglecting the monthly environmental exercise.

Speaking on the development, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Sunday Akinwalire, expressed displeasure over the nonchalant attitude of residents of the community.

Rating the level of compliance as zero, the Commissioner said his team had consistently visited the area to ensure cleanliness, but the adamant nature of some residents had frustrated their efforts.

“Those arrested will appear before the environmental court and I appeal to residents to do the needful in maintaining clean environment in order to prevent environmental related diseases”

However, he called on traditional rulers to sensitise landlords on flood prevention in their jurisdiction.

On his part, the Acting General Manager, Ondo State Waste Management Authority, Mr. Adekunle Olajumbu, while frowning at the lackadaisical attitude of some residents towards the exercise, said the authority is more prepared to enforce the environmental law in the state.
