The Ondo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees has raised the alarm over what it described as a violent attack on its Owo Local Government chairman, Comrade Adetunji Adene, calling for urgent intervention by security agencies and the state government.
The state President of the union, Fredrick Akinrinlola, in a statement issued on Monday, condemned the incident, describing it as a threat to workers’ safety and democratic governance at the grassroots level.
According to him, the victim was attacked at his residence last week by a group of armed men shortly after returning from an official engagement in Akure.
Akinrinlola said the assailants, numbering about 20, allegedly stormed the house with the intention of killing the union leader but were forced to flee following alarm raised by family members and neighbours.
He disclosed that Adene is currently receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Medical Centre Owo, adding that his condition remains critical.
The union leader warned that the attack had heightened fear among local government workers in the area, with many reportedly reluctant to report for duty due to security concerns.
He described the incident as more than an isolated attack, alleging that it reflected a growing trend of violence capable of destabilising the local government system.
Akinrinlola called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to urgently intervene and restore safety in Owo, stressing that workers could no longer operate under fear.
He also urged security agencies in the state to investigate the attack, apprehend those responsible and provide adequate protection for local government staff.
While reaffirming the union’s commitment to peace, the NULGE president warned that workers would resist any attempt to turn local government secretariats into arenas of violence.
He appealed for swift action to prevent further breakdown of law and order, noting that the safety of workers remained paramount.
