Edo: Group condemns attack at political gathering, urges restraint amid rising tension

The Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association has called for calm and political restraint following a recent shooting incident at a political gathering in Edo State, warning that rising political tension could threaten democratic stability and economic activities.

In a statement issued to newsmen by its president, Chinedu Ukatu, the association condemned the attack, which reportedly occurred during an event attended by prominent political figures, including Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie Oyegun.

Ukatu described the incident, which took place in Benin City, as a troubling development capable of undermining democratic principles, stressing that political actors must be allowed to campaign and move freely without fear of intimidation or violence.

He noted that while citizens have the right to express dissent and criticise government policies, such engagements must remain constructive and free from hate speech or actions capable of escalating tensions.

The association also urged the Federal Government to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident and guarantee the safety of all political aspirants and stakeholders participating in the democratic process across Nigeria.

According to Ukatu, the trading community would be adversely affected if political violence persists, warning that instability could disrupt commercial activities and weaken public confidence in governance.

He therefore appealed to Nigerians to reject violence and embrace peaceful political participation, reaffirming the association’s support for democratic values and for all aspirants working towards national development.
