As the tenure of the President-General (PG) of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu, nears its conclusion on January 10, 2025, he has called on the newly formed electoral and screening committees to conduct a credible election for his successor while adhering to the principles of fairness and the rule of law.

Chukwu made the appeal during the inauguration of the election and screening committees in Owerri. He reminded the members that their actions would be closely monitored and that history would judge them based on how they execute their responsibilities. He emphasized that the reputation of the Igbo nation, known for excellence, must be maintained through transparent and fair electoral processes.

“Excuses will not be tolerated; all your actions will be scrutinized. The future of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is in your hands, and your conscience will be your guide,” said Chukwu.

The PG’s call came after his appointment to lead Ohanaeze following the deaths of former Presidents-General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu in 2024 and Prof. George Obiozor in 2022. He assumed leadership under the doctrine of necessity, as presented by the Imo Chapter, and is set to complete the balance of a four-year tenure allotted to Imo State.

Chief Ejiofor Onyia, the newly appointed Chairman of the Electoral Committee, thanked Chukwu for entrusting him and other members with the task and promised to work diligently to achieve the organization’s goals. Onyia also called for cooperation from Igbo leaders, members of the Imeobi and General Assembly, and fellow committee members to ensure a free and fair election, emphasizing the importance of playing by the rules.

The full list of the electoral committee includes prominent figures such as Amb. Eddy Onuoha, Chief Damian Okeke Ogene, Chief Dr. Charles Odunukwe, Hon. Chinedu Ukatu, Engr. Nnamdi Nwadiogbu, Chief Goddy Ogbaga, and many others.

Dr. Eme Okoro was inaugurated as the Chairman of the Screening Committee, with Prof. Fabian Onah as Secretary. Other members of the Screening Committee include Mr. Ndubisi Jaja-Wachukwu, Ogbuefi Chris Eluemuno, and Chief Dave Nwachukwu, among others.

With the election scheduled for January 2025, the process has garnered attention from within the Igbo community, as stakeholders are eager to see the future direction of the organization. The successful completion of this electoral process is expected to pave the way for continued unity and progress within the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
