Ondo-born lawyer, Femi Ogunjumelo, named among 20 most influential Nigerian lawyers in US
An indigene of Ondo State, Femi Ogunjumelo, has emerged as one of the twenty most influential Nigerian lawyers practising in the United States of America.
Mr Ogunjumelo, who hails from Igbotako in the Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, is based in Houston, Texas, US, where he currently practises as an attorney with specialisation in personal injury law matters traversing catastrophic injuries, workplace injuries, industrial accidents and explosions, maritime and offshore injuries, trucking and motor vehicle wrecks, defective products, premises liability and wrongful deaths.
According to a publication, Diaspora Newsline, in its Special Christmas Edition, 2024, Mr Ogunjumelo was named among the twenty most influential Nigerian lawyers in the US out of over 100 prominent lawyers surveyed by the magazine based on his prodigious contributions to legal practice in the country.
Others named alongside him are: Judge David Ndudim; Hon.Judge Jude Nkama; Victor O.Moses; John Iweanoge Jr; Emeka G.Onwezi; Anthony O.Egbase; Labi Akere; Emeka Chinwuba; Salad Blegay; Wanker B.Fisher; David Elesinmogun and Femi Salu.
Others are Adebukola Adesola Mabadeje; Osas Iyamu; Leila Adams; Nexus Uzoma Sea; Abiodun Bakare; Chiaka U.Adele and Kola Odugbena.
The attorneys and judges whose practices cut across the 50 states of the US and Washington DC were named by the publication because of their sterling contributions to diverse areas of law in the country and their personal professional accomplishments, among others.
Who is Femi Ogunjumelo?
Femi Ogunjumelo is of Yoruba extraction, from the South-west of Nigeria.
After his primary and secondary school education in his hometown, Igbotako, he proceeded to Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, where he bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Law. He thereafter went to the Nigerian Law School.
He practised for six years as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria before relocating to the US where he underwent further training in American Law, earning a Master’s degree – LLM- in Law from the University of Houston Law Centre, Houston, Texas, majoring in energy, environment and natural resources law.
He was subsequently admitted to practise law as an attorney by the Supreme Court and all State Courts of Texas, the United States Court for the Southern District of Texas, the United States Court for the Northern District of Texas and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the American Bar Association and an awardee of the American Institute of Legal Advocates(ALA).
As a testament to Mr Ogunjumelo’s compelling litigation skills and deep commitment to justice, he has been recognised by several different committees and organisations which include: (a) Recognised as a “Rising Star” in the field of Personal Injury Law – American Institute of Legal Advocates(2018); (b) Top Attorneys of North America’s Who’s Who directories 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 and © Named “Best Litigator of the Year” by American Institute of Trial Lawyers (2020-2021).
He is the managing partner of Mayday Law Centre headquartered in Houston, Texas, US.
Besides his utilisation of law as a tool for seeking justice and social re-engineering, Mr Ogunjumelo is also a notable philanthropist contributing to worthy causes both in the US and in Nigeria.
He has a scholarship foundation in Nigeria via which he helps indigent but brilliant students annually with educational materials as well as monetary support to ease their access to education.
He also runs Waterfronts Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, which helps in the provision of potable water to people in rural communities that lack government-owned public tap systems in Ondo State.
He is a community development advocate and has contributed immensely towards the development of his ancestral community – Igbotako- and other neighbouring towns in the axis.
He is happily married with kids.
