Why we must explore new avenues for revenue generation – Gov Aiyedatiwa

The Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has said that it is important to explore new avenues for revenue generation while ensuring fairness and equity in tax policies.

Governor Aiyedatiwa stated this at the Opening ceremony of induction of the newly recruited 165 staff of ODIRS.

According to him, the world is evolving rapidly, and everyone must adapt to new technologies and methodologies to stay ahead of the curve.

Governor Aiyedatiwa noted that the role and importance of public servants cannot be overemphasised, stressing that a strong Public Service is the bedrock on which good governance, policy execution and pathways for the delivery of democratic dividends can be built and achieved.

The Governor said “ your induction marks not only the beginning of your journey with the Revenue Service but also the continuation of our collective mission to serve the good people of Ondo State with diligence, integrity, and innovation. As we gather here, let us reflect on the importance of the work that lies ahead of us. The role of the Ondo State Internal Revenue Service is pivotal in ensuring the economic growth and development of our beloved State. Our ability to efficiently collect taxes and revenue directly impacts the provision of essential services, infrastructure development, and the overall well-being of our citizens”.

He commended them for choosing to embark on this path of public service. “Your dedication and commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism will be instrumental in achieving our goals. I urge you to approach your work with enthusiasm, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility. Remember that you are not just tax collectors; you are partners in the progress of Ondo State”.

He also emphasised the importance of continuous learning and professional development. “The field of taxation is constantly evolving, and it is essential that we stay abreast of the latest trends, regulations, and best practices. I encourage you to take advantage of the training and development opportunities that will be provided to you, and to seek out ways to expand your knowledge and skills.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that you are beginning a noble journey with the Ondo State Internal Revenue Service. I encourage you to embrace innovation and creativity in your approach to revenue generation.

Earlier in his address, the Chairman, Ondo State Internal Revenue Service, Mr Tolu Adegbie, while congratulating the new staff on their induction, emphasised the organization’s commitment to generate optimal revenue in an efficient and professional manner for the development the State.

He articulated the mission to transform Ondo State’s tax narrative and enhance revenue generation.

He urged the new recruits to embrace their roles with enthusiasm, emphasizing the importance of transparency and professionalism in their duties. Highlighting their role as public servants, Adegeie emphasized their commitment to serving the people of Ondo State.

Adegbie further noted the significant growth in Ondo State’s revenue, from 10 billion in 2017 to 40 billion at the end 2023, attributing this success to the focused efforts of the organization. He outlined plans to deploy the new staff, recognizing their fortune in joining a dedicated and focused organization.

The head of service, Mr Bayo Philip, appreciated the Governor for giving the new staff a nod for their recruitment. While congratulating the newly recruited staff, he said “there must be decency in your discipline. You must not compromise the ethics of your job, don’t deliver late, do all you must do properly”.

Katherine Akinkuotu who spoke on behalf of other newly recruited staff appreciated the Governor for approving their recruitment, promising to uphold the legacy of ODIRS and contribute immensely to the development of the State.

Olamide Oladiji, represented by the Majority leader of the House and Chairman, House committee on Finance and appropriation, Hon. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, management Staff of ODIRS, among others.
