The newly appointed Commissioner of Police for Lagos Ports, Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba, psc+, brings a wealth of experience to his new role, with over 30 years in law enforcement, intelligence, and border security.

His extensive career in the Nigeria Police Force, spanning strategic leadership, community policing, and international peacekeeping, positions him as a key figure in tackling security challenges at Nigeria’s busiest maritime hub.

Maikaba holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Bayero University, Kano, which he obtained in 1992.

He joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1994 as a cadet Assistant Superintendent and has since served in various operational, investigative, and administrative capacities across different states. His track record of excellence and strategic policing has earned him commendations throughout his career.

His expertise in border security is notable, having commanded operations at Maje, Kebbi State, and Seme, Lagos State—both critical trade and migration points. He also led the Inspector General of Police’s Special Taskforce on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering, where he spearheaded efforts to combat oil theft and related crimes.

This experience will be instrumental in addressing maritime security concerns in Lagos.

A strong advocate for inter-agency collaboration, Maikaba is known for his ability to work with various security and regulatory agencies to maintain law and order.

His background in community policing, honed through training as one of the first Nigerian officers trained by the British, has shaped his proactive and engagement-driven approach to law enforcement.

Beyond national assignments, Maikaba has participated in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Kosovo (2001) and Sudan (2006), earning two UN commendation medals for his contributions to global peace efforts. His leadership roles at the Police Staff College, Jos, and the Police College, Kaduna, further highlight his dedication to mentoring and training the next generation of police officers.

As he assumes responsibility for security at Lagos ports, Maikaba is expected to leverage his vast experience to combat smuggling, illegal activities, and other maritime security threats.

With a reputation for leading from the front, he is well-positioned to enhance safety and efficiency at one of Nigeria’s most crucial economic gateways.
