Former Chief of Staff in Ondo State, Chief Olugbenga Ale, has said the growing dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria is a direct result of the party’s performance at both national and state levels.
Speaking in an interview at an APC stakeholders’ meeting, Ale noted that the gathering was convened in the spirit of the ongoing political season.
Ale maintained that the APC remains the dominant political force in the country, attributing this to the impact of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
According to him, the administration’s activities at the national level have continued to draw people into the party.
He listed the removal of fuel subsidy, which he said has led to sufficient petrol supply across the country, the improved margin in the foreign exchange market, and other economic measures as reasons the economy is becoming stronger.
He added that the introduction of the student loan scheme and recent road construction projects, particularly in the South-West, have strengthened the President’s standing.
“For the first time, Ondo State is having a number of roads being constructed by the Federal Government. When President Obasanjo was there, we never had one. So these are things that we are celebrating,” he said.
Ale stated that Ondo State has continued to make progress by building on the achievements of the former governor, the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, adding that the state chapter of the APC has also been witnessing increased membership, including governors from opposition parties who are joining the party because of perceived benefits of APC governance.
He explained that the stakeholders’ meeting was aimed at mobilising governance effort, governance support, and governance resources for the upcoming presidential election, noting that Ondo State has no major election until “2028 or thereabouts.”
“All this we are doing is to mobilise support for our leader, our national leader and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. That’s why we are doing all this,” he said.
Ale stressed that despite the APC’s dominance, Nigeria is not gravitating towards a one-party system.
