The Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has handed over a 40-foot container loaded with cannabis indica, valued at over ₦4.7bn, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
The handover took place at the Enforcement Unit of the command, as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug smuggling and other transnational crimes at the nation’s ports.
Addressing journalists during the ceremony, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, said the seizure aligned with the theme of the World Customs Organisation’s 2026 International Customs Day, which focuses on protecting society through vigilance and commitment.
“Today, we are here to brief you on a major development in our operations aimed at securing our borders and safeguarding public safety,” Onyeka said.
He explained that the container, with number HLXU841299/0, was intercepted on January 28, 2026, following an extensive physical examination conducted by Customs officers in collaboration with operatives of the NDLEA and the Department of State Services.
Onyeka disclosed that the examination revealed 55 jumbo bags of cannabis indica, comprising 2,366 packages with a combined weight of 1,183 kilogrammes, concealed inside the container alongside a Colt’s MK IV .45 automatic pistol and an empty magazine.
He said the illicit drugs, estimated to have a street value of ₦4.732bn, were hidden among three used vehicles— a Hyundai Santa Fe, a Toyota Sienna and a Toyota Matrix while one suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure.
“Consequently, the seized narcotics are being formally handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution in line with the law, while the firearm will be transferred to the appropriate agency,” Onyeka stated.
The Customs boss reaffirmed the service’s zero tolerance for drug trafficking, noting that the command remained resolute in its commitment to national security and public health.
He also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his leadership and support, adding that inter-agency collaboration had continued to enhance operational effectiveness.
Onyeka assured members of the public that the Tin Can Island Port Command would sustain its vigilance in combating smuggling and other illegal activities at all ports of entry.
