The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has called for a shift towards merit-based leadership selection in Nigeria, stressing that the country’s progress largely depends on the quality of individuals entrusted with public office.

Keyamo made this known while delivering a lecture at the 70th birthday celebration of legal luminary and political leader, Chief Olusola Oke (SAN), where he spoke on the theme, “Leadership Recruitment in Nigeria: Challenges and the Path Forward.”

According to the minister, leadership recruitment encompasses the processes through which individuals are identified, selected and positioned for leadership roles, noting that when such processes are flawed, the entire system suffers.

He decried the growing influence of money, godfatherism and ethnic considerations in Nigeria’s political space, warning that these factors often override competence and weaken governance.

He noted that despite Nigeria’s abundant human and natural resources, development has remained elusive due to persistent leadership challenges.

Citing the late literary icon Chinua Achebe, Keyamo reiterated that the nation’s problems are closely tied to a failure of leadership, stressing the need to address the root causes embedded in the selection process.

The minister further observed that the high cost of political participation has excluded many capable Nigerians, while political sponsorship and weak internal party structures have continued to distort democratic processes.

He added that the absence of clear ideological direction among political parties makes it difficult for voters to make informed choices based on policy and vision.

Keyamo also highlighted the issue of electoral violence and manipulation, noting that such practices discourage credible individuals from participating in politics and ultimately erode public trust in the system.

Proffering solutions, he called for the strengthening of key institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), emphasising the need for its independence and adequate funding.

He also advocated measures to regulate campaign financing and reduce the influence of money in politics.

He urged political parties to reform their internal processes by ensuring transparency and fairness in the conduct of primaries, adding that credible leadership begins with credible party structures.

He further stressed the importance of civic education to empower voters and enhance active participation in the democratic process.

Keyamo also recommended stricter enforcement of laws against electoral offences, including the establishment of a dedicated body to prosecute offenders, noting that accountability is essential to curbing impunity.

Speaking on leadership qualities, he emphasised the need for individuals who are not only competent but also possess integrity, humility, and a genuine commitment to public service.

He said leaders must see public office as a responsibility to serve the people rather than an avenue for personal gain.

He concluded that while Nigeria’s challenges are significant, they are not insurmountable, expressing optimism that with deliberate reforms and a collective commitment to doing things right, the country can achieve its full potential.

He described Oke as a man of integrity whose life exemplifies the values of consistency, principle, and service.

In his address, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa said Oke’s attainment of 70 years symbolizes not just longevity but a life of purpose, impact, and unwavering commitment to society.

He noted that the legal icon has, over the decades, built an enviable career marked by intellectual depth, professional integrity and dedication to justice, earning him the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

According to him, Oke’s brilliance, disciplined advocacy, and ethical standards have continued to inspire both colleagues and younger members of the legal profession.

Beyond the courtroom, the governor highlighted Oke’s significant contributions to governance and development, particularly his roles in the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission and the Niger Delta Development Commission, where he championed equity, environmental justice and socio-economic development for oil-producing communities.

He also commended Oke’s active participation in the political landscape, including his involvement in Ondo State governorship contests, describing it as a reflection of his democratic values and commitment to inclusive governance and transparency.

Describing him as a proud son of Ilaje land, Aiyedatiwa said Oke’s life represents a blend of scholarship, resilience, and public-spirited service, adding that the inclusion of a public lecture and book presentation in the celebration underscores his intellectual depth and enduring influence.

“Chief Olusola Oke’s life is a testament to purposeful living, guided by principle and enriched by service to humanity,” the governor stated.

On behalf of the government and people of Ondo State, Aiyedatiwa congratulated the elder statesman and prayed for continued good health, strength, and more years of impactful service.

In attendance were; The Deputy Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami; Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji; Federal and State Lawmakers; Political Appointees; Traditional Rulers; among other eminent personalities.
