Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday commissioned the Onyearugbulem–Shagari/Irese Road Flyover and Junction Improvement Project in Akure, applauding Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, describing it as an ambitious infrastructure drive transforming the state’s economic and transportation landscape.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held along the busy Ilesha–Akure–Owo Expressway, Shettima said the flyover project would not only address long-standing traffic congestion and safety concerns in the area, but also stimulate commercial growth and improve connectivity within Ondo State and the wider South-West region.
The Vice President noted that the flyover would ease traffic congestion, improve road safety and stimulate commercial activities along one of the busiest transport corridors in the state.
He said the Federal Government remains committed to supporting states that prioritise infrastructure development as a catalyst for economic expansion and regional integration.
Also present at the event was Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, alongside top government officials, traditional rulers, security chiefs and political stakeholders.
In his address, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the flyover as a historic milestone for Ondo State, noting that it is the first flyover bridge ever constructed in Akure, the state capital.
According to the governor, the project was conceived to permanently address the persistent traffic gridlock and frequent accidents that had characterised the Onyearugbulem–Shagari and Akure–Benin Expressway intersection for many years.
He explained that the junction had long been a major concern for motorists and residents due to heavy traffic congestion, delays, and recurring road crashes, adding that the completion of the project would significantly improve traffic flow and safety.
He stated that the flyover project was initiated during the administration of the late former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and sustained by his administration as part of efforts to ensure continuity in governance and infrastructure delivery.
The governor said his administration had intensified road construction and rehabilitation projects across the state within the last one year, stressing that quality infrastructure remains critical to economic growth, investment attraction, and improved standard of living.
He listed some of the ongoing and completed projects to include the dualisation of the Akure–Idanre Road, Akungba–Ikare Road, Okitipupa–Igbokoda Road, and College Road in Igbokoda.
Govenor Aiyedatiwa also highlighted the rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of more than 100 kilometres of roads across the three senatorial districts of the state, including Akure–Ijare Road, Akure–Imafon Road, Aiyegunle–Oka Road, and Igbotako Road.
He noted that while several of the projects had already been completed and commissioned, others were at advanced stages of execution.
Describing the Onyearugbulem Flyover as one of the flagship projects of his administration, the governor said the project had already improved movement within the metropolis and reduced travel time for commuters.
Aiyedatiwa further reaffirmed the state’s support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government.
“Ondo State is APC and we will deliver massively for Mr President,” he declared.
The governor commended the contractors, engineers, consultants, and workers involved in the project, noting that the flyover was delivered largely by indigenous professionals who demonstrated competence and technical capacity.
He also appreciated residents of Akure for their patience and cooperation throughout the construction period, assuring that the project would remain beneficial to generations of Ondo residents.
