The Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) will on June 23, 2026, inaugurate its newly elected Executive Council in Lagos, with a renewed push for ethical standards and professionalism in maritime journalism.
The ceremony is scheduled to hold at Rockview Hotel, Apapa, and is expected to draw stakeholders across the maritime, shipping, logistics, security and media sectors.
The event is themed “Upholding Ethical Journalism for Maritime Development,” and is designed to spotlight the role of the media in promoting transparency, accountability and sustainable growth within Nigeria’s maritime industry.
The Chairman of the occasion is the President of the Maritime Security Providers Association of Nigeria (MASPAN), Emmanuel Maiguwa Gankino, while keynote remarks will be delivered by public relations and events management expert, Bolaji Abimbola.
Prominent industry figures are expected at the event, including the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dayo Mobereola; the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr Abubakar Dantsoho; the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Barrister Pius Akutah Ukeyima; and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Also expected are chief executives of maritime agencies, leaders of shipping companies, terminal operators, freight forwarders, and key players across the maritime value chain.
Speaking ahead of the inauguration, MARAN President, Comrade Oluyinka Onigbinde, described the event as a defining step in repositioning the association for greater impact within the maritime sector.
He said the new executive council would focus on strengthening professional capacity, deepening stakeholder engagement, and reinforcing adherence to ethical journalism standards.
According to him, ethical reportage remains central to the development of the maritime industry, which he described as critical to Nigeria’s economic growth.
“The maritime sector plays a vital role in national development, and the media must continue to ensure accurate, fair and responsible reporting that supports its progress,” he said.
Onigbinde also called for sustained collaboration between government agencies, industry operators and journalists in advancing the country’s blue economy objectives.
The inauguration will formally usher in the new leadership of MARAN, which is expected to steer the association towards improved professionalism and stronger institutional relevance in the maritime sector.
