Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), has announced a week-long lineup of activities to honour its outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, as he prepares to conclude his tenure after four years of service.
The programme, unveiled by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Chairman of the End-of-Tenure Committee, Prof. Adebisi Daramola, is designed to celebrate Prof. Ige’s contributions to the growth and transformation of the institution, describing his administration as one marked by purposeful leadership, innovation and enduring impact.
The valedictory activities will commence on Monday, June 29, with a special lecture organised by the Faculty of Science in honour of the Vice-Chancellor. The lecture, titled “Management Has a Few Things to Learn From Science,” will be delivered by Prof. Victor Olumekun at the Nelson Mandela Hall by 2:00 p.m.
Activities will continue on Wednesday, July 1, with a Special Monthly Prayer Meeting at the University Multipurpose Hall by 9:00 a.m. This will be followed by a Valedictory Senate Meeting and the presentation of the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure report at the Senate Chamber by noon. The day’s events will conclude with an AAUA Students’ Praise Fiesta at 4:00 p.m. in honour of Prof. Ige.
On Thursday, July 2, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), AAUA Chapter, will host a colloquium celebrating the Vice-Chancellor’s achievements at the University Multipurpose Hall by 10:00 a.m., while a friendly football match will take place later in the day at the University’s Sports Centre.

A major highlight of the valedictory programme will take place on Monday, July 6, with the commissioning of Prof. Ige’s legacy project—an 80-bed hall of residence located opposite the University Health Centre—scheduled for 10:00 a.m. The Vice-Chancellor will thereafter deliver his valedictory address at the University Multipurpose Hall by 11:00 a.m.
The day’s ceremony will also feature the unveiling of the Vice-Chancellor’s Milestones Magazine and the launch of a commemorative book of essays documenting the achievements and legacy of his administration. Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, Executive Director, Corporate Services, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), is expected to serve as Chairman and Chief Launcher of the event.
The celebrations will culminate on Sunday, July 12, with an End-of-Tenure Thanksgiving Service at Saint James’ Anglican Church, Ita Ogbolu, where members of the university community, friends and well-wishers will gather to appreciate God for what the organisers described as Prof. Ige’s exemplary stewardship.
Prof. Olugbenga Ige was appointed the sixth substantive Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University on July 7, 2021. His administration is widely credited with advancing infrastructure development, strengthening academic standards and promoting institutional growth, leaving behind a legacy expected to endure long after the completion of his tenure.
