Ondo govt reaffirms commitment to sports complex renovation and development

The Ondo State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Saka Yusuf Ogunleye, has provided clarification regarding ongoing renovation works at the Ondo State Sports Complex.

This response comes after a communiqué issued by the state chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) expressed concerns over the state of the facility.

In his statement, Hon. Ogunleye emphasized that Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa had already approved the renovation of the sports complex, including the football pitch, and the contractor had been fully mobilized to begin work.

He assured that construction is currently underway, specifically at the hockey pitch, where the old synthetic surface from the football pitch is being repurposed. The commissioner explained that the old surface is being replaced, with a new one already procured and set to be laid soon.

“The contractor has been on-site since his mobilisation, working to ensure that the renovations meet the necessary standards. Governor Aiyedatiwa, a man of his word, remains fully committed to the development of sports in our Sunshine State.” Ogunleye stated.

Addressing SWAN’s concerns, Ogunleye called on the association to collaborate with the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, underscoring the importance of working together to achieve shared goals.

He reminded SWAN that the ministry’s doors are always open to provide relevant information and updates on government policies and programs aimed at advancing sports in Ondo State.

In support of his position, the commissioner cited the recent success of the state’s athletes at the National Youth Games held in Asaba, Delta State, attributing their impressive performance to the backing of Governor Aiyedatiwa.

“Please note that during any renovation or construction project, it takes time before sporting activities can resume, as is the case with the ongoing work at the National Stadium,” he added, assuring that the government’s commitment to sports remains unwavering.

Hon. Ogunleye concluded by acknowledging other concerns raised in the SWAN communiqué, affirming that they have been duly noted.
