Armed forces remembrance day: Gov Aiyedatiwa empowers 51 widows of fallen heroes

The Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Wednesday, empowered 51 widows of the departed heroes in the State with N35 million naira microcredit revolving interest- free loans.

The Governor presented cheques to the beneficiaries of the loan at the Final Parade , Laying of Wreaths and empowerment for 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration held at Government Cenotaph, Alagbaka Akure.

Represented by his Deputy, Dr Olayide Adelami, he emphasized that the event is a solemn tradition observed across the country to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s fallen heroes and appreciated the contributions of living veterans.

He described the occasion as a culture of honor and urged citizens to reflect on the profound impact of their service while remembering the families they left behind.

“Let us take a moment to reflect on the profound impact of their service and the sacrifices their families have endured. As we honor our fallen heroes, we must not forget the dependents they left behind, particularly their widows. This celebration would be incomplete without deliberate efforts to empower them.”

“We recognize the challenges they face, and we are committed to ensuring they have the resources they deserve, not merely with words, but through tangible actions. In this regard, we are backing our promises with financial and material support.”

“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to everyone who contributed to the welfare of the legionnaires last year. Your support has made a significant difference, and I urge you to continue your efforts to uplift the families of our fallen heroes.”

Highlighting the plight of the widows of fallen heroes, the Governor announced the approval of ₦35 million for the empowerment of these widows, an increase from last year’s allocation.

He noted that 61 widows benefited from the state’s interest-free microcredit loan scheme last year and assured that the increased funding would accommodate even more beneficiaries. He also encouraged widows who successfully repaid their loans to reapply for higher amounts under the program.

“As part of our commitment, we are scaling up our empowerment initiatives. Last year, 61 widows benefited from the interest-free microcredit loan scheme, a process designed to provide support at zero interest.”

“I am pleased to announce that this year, we have approved the sum of ₦35 million for the empowerment of widows of our fallen heroes. This allocation will accommodate even more beneficiaries, ensuring that no one is left behind.”

“Furthermore, widows who successfully repaid their loans last year will have the opportunity to apply for higher amounts. This continuous process reflects our dedication to putting smiles on the faces of the dependents of our fallen heroes.”

“I commend all stakeholders whose efforts have made today’s event a reality. Your collaboration underscores the power of unity in addressing the needs of our veterans and their families.”

The Governor also used the occasion to urge citizens to collaborate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their communities to ensure the safety and security of lives and property.

“As we celebrate, I urge all citizens to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of our communities. Be vigilant, report any unusual activities, and play your part in maintaining peace.”

Ahead of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, the Governor appealed to the people of the state to remain law-abiding and resist being used by political actors to perpetrate violence.

“Finally, as we approach the local government elections on Saturday, I call on everyone to remain law-abiding and resist any attempt to be used by political gladiators. Let us all contribute to free, fair, and peaceful elections, as we collectively uphold the integrity of our democracy.” He added

The State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Deaconess Lola Fagbemi in her vote of thanks, acknowledged the efforts of the armed forces in promoting peace and unity in the Country.

She affirmed that the loan was given to the beneficiaries based on the recommendations of the Legion and the widows Council .

Also Speaking in an interview,the Chairman Nigerian Legion, Ondo State Council,Col.Olu Apata (Rtd) described the event as an annual one to remember and honour the fallen heroes and the serving ones.

Apata lauded the State Government’s efforts at prioritizing the welfare of its members, and applauded them over the disbursement of loans to wives of the fallen heroes urging the government not to relent .

Widows of the fallen heroes, including Mrs Christianah Ogunjobi,Mrs Elizabeth Owolemi and Mrs Clara Tanko said that the annual event enabled Nigerians to remember and honour their late husbands who died defending their fatherland.

They commended the State government for the loan handed them, promising to refund it promptly.

Dignitaries who spoke in separate interviews eulogised the Nigerian Armed Forces who served and are still serving in various peace support operation worldwide.

The event was also attended by Members of the State Executive Council and other political appointees, Speaker House of Assembly, Chief Olamide Oladij and other members of the house, Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola,Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, Commander 32 Artillery Brigade Akure,Major Gen. JR lar, Head of Service Bayo Philips ,Deji of Akure,Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo,Religious and other traditional Leaders,widows of the fallen heroes, Security Agents,Accounting Officers, among several other dignitaries.

The event also witnessed prayers for the fallen heroes and dependants, the serving officers, and the country. There was also inspection of guard and released of balloons as a symbol of peace by the representative of the Governor, firing of Vollieys and Reveille.
