Bishop Arogundade demands urgent urban makeover

By Precious Oluwole

The Catholic Bishop of Ondo Diocese, Most Rev. Dr Jude Ayodeji Arogundade, has sounded the alarm over the worsening environmental and urban conditions in Ondo State, calling on government authorities to take decisive action to restore order, cleanliness and dignity.

Speaking in Akure, Bishop Arogundade warned of the proliferation of poorly planned urban areas, markets spilling onto highways and the persistent problem of open defecation as pressing issues that threaten public health and the quality of life across the state.

He cautioned that failure to address these challenges could undermine Ondo’s development prospects and diminish the wellbeing of its citizens.

“The state is richly endowed, yet we see our towns and cities losing their structure and sense of order. Government must act decisively, even if the measures are unpopular, to correct these lapses,” the bishop said.

Linking the environmental and urban planning deficits to the broader need for integrity and purpose-driven leadership, he urged officials to manage public resources responsibly and implement policies prioritising long-term planning over short-term convenience.

Bishop Arogundade also reminded leaders that their stewardship of the state’s abundant natural and human resources carries both moral and historical responsibility.

He called for a collective effort by government and citizens to protect Ondo’s environment, promote sustainable urban development, and safeguard public spaces.

Stressing that leadership requires conscience and courage rather than popularity, the bishop urged officials to embrace values of justice, education, and diligence while confronting the state’s environmental crises.

Describing 2026 as a defining moment for Ondo, Bishop Arogundade urged immediate action to ensure that the state’s towns and cities reflect the dignity of its people and the blessings of God.
