The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, has reflected on his journey over the past ten years as a monarch, expressing deep gratitude to God, his family, and key stakeholders who supported his ascension to the throne.
Speaking during an interactive session with the press men at his palace on Friday, the monarch recalled contesting the throne three times before finally being chosen by the kingmakers in what he described as an unprecedented unanimous decision during the 47th traditional council sitting.
He credited former Governor Olusegun Mimiko for approving his installation, acknowledging the critical role of political will in the traditional selection process. “You can have kingmakers but without government approval, nothing happens. I thank Mimiko. He was my governor then and still remains my governor.”
Reflecting on the past decade, the Deji revealed the numerous legal and traditional battles he had faced, particularly over land rights and the recognition of his authority in Akure-speaking communities.
“I have faced over 100 court cases, people are trying to take our lands and deny my authority. But Akure is Akure, anywhere you speak the Akure dialect is part of Akure, and I remain the prescribed authority.”
Hcalles for peace and unity among traditional rulers in Ondo State, saying his tenure on the throne will will foster development which will spread across Akure kingdom.
“If we unite, if we speak with one voice, we can produce a governor. Akure has the numbers, but we lack the unity,” he said.
In response to questions on the clash between tradition and modern influences especially in succession and burial customs, the Deji maintained that upholding Akure’s traditions is non-negotiable. He shared how, upon ascending the throne, he made a vow to honor all rites and customs, performing sacred rituals regularly, and encouraging others to respect the culture.
“I go to church. I go to mosque. But I do not joke with tradition, Christians go through Jesus, Muslims go through Muhammad, and we go through our ancestral paths all seeking the same God.”
The Deji further emphasized the inclusive nature of Akure, welcoming non-indigenes as integral members of the community. “Anywhere you live is your home,” he declared, adding that people of all origins who contribute to Akure’s development are part of its future. He expressed pride in how far the city has come and acknowledged that though many challenges remain, the progress is undeniable.
When asked about his plans for consolidating traditional leadership and addressing insecurity in Ondo State, Oba Aladelusi noted that he had already initiated outreach to all traditional rulers within the Akure Division upon ascending the throne.
He called for more collaboration among monarchs and stronger synergy with government and security agencies to tackle the growing threats. “Only with unity, shared values, and a commitment to peace can we truly move Akure and Ondo State forward,” he affirmed.
Concluding his address, the Deji reiterated his commitment to tradition, justice, and communal growth. While he admitted there are still many things he wishes to see achieved in Akure, he acknowledged that progress takes time.
“I am not looking for anything for myself anymore. My prayer is that the next generation of Akure sons and daughters will rise with unity, pride, and purpose to reclaim their place in this state and this nation.”
Also speaking, the Chairman, central planning committee, Mr Femi Meshe appreciated the Deji for the privilege of serving as the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee for his 10th Coronation anniversary.
According to him, it has been a demanding yet fulfilling responsibility. “The series of events commenced on Wednesday, the 16th, and continued yesterday, with more lined up through Sunday, culminating in a Thanksgiving service at St. David’s Church.
“We thank God that everything has gone smoothly so far. I also extend my sincere appreciation to the press for their coverage and look forward to their continued support until the conclusion of the celebrations”, he concluded.
