Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has commended the Catholic Church for its immense contributions to education, healthcare, moral values, and nation-building, describing it as a “pillar of faith and development” whose impact continues to shape society positively.

He gave this commendation at the 15th Episcopal anniversary and 35th Priestly Ordination anniversary of Most Rev. Jude Arogundade, Catholic Bishop, Ondo Diocese, held at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Akure on Saturday.

The Governor described the celebration as a testament to the enduring legacy of men who have dedicated their lives to the service of God and humanity.

While applauding Bishop Arogundade for his exemplary life and ministry, the Governor noted that his pastoral approach, rooted in the ecclesial values of compassion, mercy, and love, has taught the lives of many, bringing solace, guidance, and hope to the poor, adding that his influence has been exemplified beyond the sanctuary, shifting public dissonance and promoting culture of peace and respect for one another, irrespective of their faith.

“His life and priesthood serve as a powerful reminder that true leadership is characterized by humility, compassion, and a deep commitment to the well-being of others”.

Governor Aiyedatiwa congratulated Bishop Arogundade alongside Rev. Father Victor Ejidike and Rev. Father Paul Nnaeto who were both ordained during the Thanksgiving mass.

“The State Government holds the Catholic Church in the very highest esteem, recognizing the significant contributions it has made educationally and spiritually to the development of our country, Nigeria, and also our state over the years. Through Catholic religious initiatives, the Church has played a vital role in promoting education, healthcare, and moral values, which are essential for the growth and development of our society. Therefore, I appreciate the Church’s commitment to nurturing the spiritual, intellectual, and moral values of our community”.

Governor Aiyedatiwa recalled the tragic attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, which claimed dozens of lives, stressing that the government has not relented in ensuring justice. He confirmed that several suspects linked to the massacre are already facing prosecution under the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2020. He also commended security agencies, including the DSS, Nigerian Army, Police, and the state’s Amotekun Corps, for their coordinated efforts in tracking and arresting perpetrators of violent crimes.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring residents that justice will be pursued for victims of past terrorist attacks in the state.

The Governor expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for implementing reforms in the nation’s security architecture, noting that Ondo State has also strengthened its own internal security with modern equipment and intelligence support. He urged citizens to unite against terrorism and criminality, assuring that his administration will continue to work with religious institutions like the Catholic Church to promote peace, moral renewal, and the overall welfare of the people.

In his response, Bishop Jude Arogundade expressed gratitude to Governor Aiyedatiwa and the state government for the recognition given to the Catholic Church. He noted that the celebration was not just about his personal milestones but about the faithfulness of God and the collective mission of the Church in society.

He said the Catholic Church would remain committed to partnering with government in education, healthcare, and social development, while also continuing to preach peace and unity.

“We are encouraged by the Governor’s words and support. The Church will not relent in its mission to nurture faith, promote moral values, and contribute to the growth of our communities. Together, we can build a society where justice, peace, and love prevail,” Arogundade concluded.
