By Precious Oluwole

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fiscal prudence, transparency, and accountability in the management of public resources.

Speaking while receiving the delegation of the Institute of Chattered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) at the cocoa conference hall, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the state’s leap in the ICAN Accountability Index from 20th position in 2022 to 8th position in 2023 as a testament to the deliberate reforms and prudent financial practices of his administration. He assured that his government would sustain the progress by strengthening public financial management, improving revenue generation, and ensuring judicious use of state resources.

The Governor also promised to address issues raised by ICAN, including the documentation of land earlier allocated to the body and the bifurcation of the state’s Directorate of Finance from Research and Development. He further pledged Ondo State’s support for ICAN’s forthcoming 55th Annual Accountants’ Conference and its 60th anniversary activities, emphasizing the critical role of accountants in driving efficiency, transparency, and sustainable development.

Expressing delight at being formally recognized as “Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants” (FCA) Aiyedatiwa recalled his early ambition to become an accountant before veering into teaching and later politics. “Rather than checking books, I found myself building lives, but today, that dream has come true,” he said, assuring the institute of his government’s continuous partnership in promoting fiscal discipline and good governance.

Earlier, the President of ICAN, Dr Haruna Nma Yahaya, commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his remarkable improvement in fiscal discipline and transparency, ranking the state eighth nationally in the ICAN Accountability Index for 2023, a leap from its 20th position in 2022.

He lauded the governor’s focus on infrastructure renewal, economic diversification, healthcare, human capital development, and support for traditional rulers, noting that these policies align with the institute’s motto of “accuracy and integrity.”

He pledged the institution’s readiness to partner with the state in strengthening public financial management, implementing new tax laws to boost internally generated revenue, and training accountants to meet global standards.

In attendance were: Secretary to the State Government, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti, Chief of Staff, Prince Segun Omojuwa, Head of Service, Mr Bayo Philip, Commissioner for Water Resources and Hygiene, Mr Ayodele Akande, Accountant General, Pastor Segun, Orisabinoni
