Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has restated his administration’s resolve to collaborate more closely with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in order to enhance road safety and protect lives across the state.
The governor gave the assurance on Thursday while receiving the Zonal Commanding Officer of FRSC Zone 11 (covering Oyo, Osun, and Ondo States), Assistant Corps Marshal Ibrahim Abubakar, who led a delegation on a courtesy visit to his office in Akure.
Governor Aiyedatiwa commended the corps for its dedication to ensuring order and safety on Nigerian roads, stressing that the FRSC plays an indispensable role in traffic management and accident prevention.
“The work of the FRSC cannot be ruled out when talking of safety on our roads. Managing traffic is an area where the corps has been proficient and of immense support to the state government. Your presence gives a strong signal to all road users,” the governor stated.
He assured that his government would continue to support the corps through policies and infrastructural interventions aimed at reducing accidents. Aiyedatiwa also emphasized the importance of enforcing traffic regulations, urging the corps to intensify checks on reckless motorists, motorcyclists, and tricycle operators whose disregard for traffic laws often endangers lives.
In response to the FRSC’s request to be included in the governor’s convoy for enhanced visibility and authority during movements, Aiyedatiwa pledged to give the matter due consideration.
Earlier in his remarks, Assistant Corps Marshal Abubakar highlighted poor road conditions as a major contributor to accidents nationwide but noted that Ondo State has recently recorded a decline in both crashes and fatalities. He attributed the improvement to the state government’s commitment to road maintenance and the corps’ continuous sensitization of road users.
Abubakar lauded the state government’s interventions in road rehabilitation, which he said had contributed significantly to reducing accident risks. He, however, called for more public awareness campaigns, particularly targeting commercial motorcyclists and tricycle operators, who constitute a significant proportion of road users in the state.
“Road safety is a collective responsibility. The FRSC will continue to play its part by raising awareness and enforcing the law, but we also need stronger collaboration with state governments to achieve safer roads,” he said.
The Zonal Commander assured that the corps would sustain its partnership with Ondo State in areas of road safety education, traffic management, and prompt emergency response to crashes.
The visit further strengthened the relationship between the Ondo State Government and the FRSC, signaling a renewed drive to reduce road accidents, safeguard lives, and ensure orderliness on highways and urban roads across the state.
