The Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has urged the labour unions to take the economic situation in the country into consideration when presenting their demands to the government.
Governor Aiyedatiwa gave this charge at the commissioning of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Shopping Complex, along Oda road, Akure, the State capital on Monday.
The Government stressed that Unions should employ the instrument of collective bargaining rather than issuing threat of strike which should normally be the last resort, instead of making it the most potent weapon in their hands.
He lauded the NUT for its foresight in putting up the Complex rather than expending its members’ dues, donations and other funds on frivolous and non-profitable activities.
“This complex, no doubt, will outlive the tenure of the executive members in whose term it was conceptualised, completed and commissioned. I congratulate the Nigeria Union of Teachers for the successful completion of this project.
Governor Aiyedatiwa commended the maturity of NUT and other labour unions in the State in the way they have been conducting their responsibilities. He added that their maturity has led to industrial peace and harmony in the State.
“As we are all aware, the major objective of any labour union is advocating better working conditions and improved welfare for their members, as this duty must be done with all sense of responsibility.
“Rest assured that as an administration, we would not shy away from performing our basic responsibilities to all our workers. We would continue to pay salaries as and when due, give them their promotion and other incentives towards improving their welfare”.
Governor Aiyedatiwa opined that the Shopping Complex will contribute to the improvement of the business life of the people around the area as well as to the economy of the Union, especially in term of revenue generation.
“Seeing different categories of businesses springing up in the State is a testament to our administration’s dedication to creating an enabling environment that encourages economic growth and enhances the quality of life for all residents. We will always provide a conducive space for businesses and foster economic development in the State”.
“Let me assure you that we will continue to ensure that adequate security measures are put in place to make our dear State a safe haven for small, medium and major investments to thrive”.
Earlier, the Chairman, Ondo State wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, (NUT) Comrade Victor Amoko in his remarks said the commissioning of the NUT Shopping Complex marks not just the inception of a public venture but the inception of the dedication of an unwavering support of members.
According to him, each obstacle encountered in the course of the project fueled the determination to bring the dream to reality.
Comrade Amoko who also added that the shopping complex is not just a physical space but a hub of innovation, quality and service, further expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the venture stressing that the ceremony is not just the opening of a market space but rather an attempt to weave the fabrics of a vibrant and thrilling community.
Describing Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa as a solid pillar behind teachers in Ondo having been a teacher himself, Comrade Amoko thanked him for his consistency as well as for the anticipated one, assuring further that the union will continue to be a dependable ally.
