Maritime stakeholders collaborate with LCCI to revive NIMAREX 2025

By Joy Enamuna

Key players in Nigeria’s maritime industry gathered at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Thursday, February 20, to discuss plans for the return of the Nigerian Maritime Expo (NIMAREX), the country’s largest maritime event.

The meeting, attended by maritime stakeholders and members of the NIMAREX 2025 planning committee, was led by former Director-General of the Indigenous Shipowners Association of Nigeria (ISAN), Funmi Folorunsho.

Other notable attendees included Chairman of the Ports Consultative Forum, Bolaji Sunmola, Captain Ebubeogu Iheanacho, representatives of Women in Maritime, and members of the maritime media.

With approximately 92% of global trade conducted by sea and 70-80% of cargo arriving in Africa destined for Nigeria, Captain Iheanacho highlighted the importance of collaboration among government agencies, shipowners, master mariners, legal professionals, journalists, and researchers.

He emphasized that the upcoming event presents a crucial opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s maritime potential.

LCCI President Gabriel Idahosa and Director-General Dr. Chinyere Almonah echoed these sentiments, stressing the sector’s role in national growth and development.

Idahosa, who pledged to present a paper at NIMAREX 2025, assured the committee that LCCI would leverage the event to raise awareness among economic stakeholders about Nigeria’s potential as a maritime powerhouse.

Participants at the meeting called for synergy among stakeholders to ensure the success of the conference, while also urging the Federal Government to implement resolutions from NIMAREX 2024.

Effective execution of these decisions, they believe, will enhance foreign and local networking, attract direct investments, and accelerate development in the maritime sector.

As the flagship event for maritime stakeholders and shipping operators in Nigeria, NIMAREX serves as a platform for showcasing innovations, fostering business partnerships, and creating real opportunities in the industry. The annual event draws both local and international players, reinforcing Nigeria’s position in the global maritime landscape.
