MWUN mourns passing of Ayo Ohiwereh

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) is in deep mourning following the passing of Brother Ayo Ohiwereh, a committed dockworker and consultant with the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF). The President General of MWUN, Prince (Dr.) Adeyanju Adewale, fnli, FCAI, described him as a remarkable personality who was dearly loved by everyone within the union.

In a statement released to Trace News Magazine, MWUN highlighted his exceptional command of the English language, which captivated audiences and earned him the affectionate nickname, “Whiteman in black skin.” His eloquence and charisma made him a respected figure in the maritime sector.

A Life Dedicated to Maritime Advocacy

Until his passing in the early hours of Friday, February 21, 2025, Brother Ayo Ohiwereh was actively working for the ITF as a Maritime Officer for Africa. He had recently returned to Nigeria from his base in London, United Kingdom, to continue his efforts in strengthening the Maritime Affiliate Scheme (MAS) project in the country.

Through his leadership, the MAS project significantly advanced collective bargaining agreements in Nigeria, aligning them with international standards. His dedication to improving the welfare of dockworkers and seafarers was instrumental in enhancing the West African transport hub and fostering the activities of ITF Coordinating Committees across Africa.

A Legacy of Excellence in the Maritime Sector

Born in Edo State’s Etsako Local Government Area, Brother Ayo Ohiwereh was a distinguished maritime expert whose vast knowledge of the sector was invaluable. His contributions spanned global initiatives, as he worked tirelessly across all seven continents to secure better welfare for transport workers worldwide.

His pioneering efforts left an indelible mark on the Nigerian transport sector, earning him recognition as a trailblazer. He was a true change-maker, a visionary leader, and an unwavering advocate for workers’ rights.

A Loss That Leaves a Void

MWUN deeply mourns the loss of Brother Ayo Ohiwereh, whose kindness and commitment to humanity will never be forgotten. His passing is an immense loss to the maritime community, creating a void that will be difficult to fill.

“Our brother has given his best to the world and has now gone to rest with the Lord,” the union stated. May his soul rest in peace.
