Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has called on citizens to embrace unity, moral values and faith-driven civic responsibility as the state marks Iits Golden Jubilee, saying sustained progress depends on collective commitment to justice, integrity and service to humanity.

The Governor made this call at the Ondo State @ 50 Jumat Thanksgiving Service held at the Central Mosque, Akure.

He expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for five decades of growth and resilience, noting that the state’s journey has been anchored on shared values, communal solidarity and the enduring role of faith in guiding leadership and governance.

He noted that although the state has faced challenges over the decades, divine guidance and communal effort have enabled it to overcome adversity, nurture human capital and build a society anchored on moral and ethical principles. According to him, faith has remained a vital pillar of progress, inspiring civic responsibility, social cohesion and service to others.

The Governor emphasised that leadership, as taught in Islam, is a sacred trust that must be exercised with justice, compassion and accountability, assuring that his administration remains committed to policies and programmes that promote equitable development and the welfare of all citizens, regardless of background.

He also acknowledged the critical role of religious leaders and institutions in fostering moral values, ethical conduct and unity across communities, describing them as indispensable partners in governance and social development.

Governor Aiyedatiwa commended the dedication of the people of Ondo State, past and present leaders, and religious institutions for their contributions to the stability and progress of the state.

Looking ahead, the Governor said his administration’s priorities include inclusive economic growth across urban and rural areas, youth empowerment through education, skills acquisition and enterprise development, as well as the strengthening of institutions for transparency, efficiency and sustainability, while preserving the cultural and religious values that unite the people.

He described the Golden Jubilee as not just a celebration, but a solemn call to renewed commitment, ethical leadership and collective responsibility, urging citizens to honour the past, cherish the present and embrace the future with courage, wisdom and faith, while praying for continued peace and progress in Ondo State.

Earlier in his sermon, the Chief Imam of Akure, Sheikh AbdulHakeem Yayi Akorede lauded past and present leaders of Ondo State for their contributions over the past 50 years, noting that the progress seen today is the result of tireless efforts by previous administrations.

He noted, “Someone who is 50 years old and has not achieved anything has lost in life,” while commending the legacy of the late Pa Ajasin and recalling the advice of his father, Yayi-Akorode, during Ajasin’s tenure.

The cleric highlighted the combined 17 years of military and 33 years of civilian rule, noting the visible achievements under democratic governance.

While commending the governor for the infrastructural transformation in Akure, he expressed appreciation for the governor’s initiatives, including sponsoring Muslims on pilgrimages to Mecca, funding those who never imagined such journeys and employing teachers to strengthen education.

While acknowledging the government’s efforts, the Chief Imam appealed for more operational vehicles to enhance city cleanliness and urged increased representation of Muslims in the state cabinet.

He called for sustained attention to development and inclusiveness to ensure that all communities benefit from governance.

Prayers were offered for the Governor, Ondo State and Nigeria at large.
