In a proactive move to tackle flooding, the government of Ondo State has approved a state-wide mapping of flood-prone areas as part of a broader strategy to mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect vulnerable communities.
Addressing the newsmen after the State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, The Commissioner for environment, Dr. Tob Loko noted that the state is prioritizing a preventive and proactive approach in its flood management plan. “We are not only going to identify flood-risk zones, but also study the root causes and environmental factors making certain areas susceptible,” he said.

He explained that while the government is determined to anticipate and address flood-related issues before disasters occur, plans are also in place to support victims in the event of unexpected flooding. “Perfection isn’t humanly possible. So, if any area is missed during mapping and later experiences flooding, we are considering options like temporary relocation and provision of emergency relief materials”.
He stressed that the initiative will also cover contingency plans such as the possible relocation of flood victims and provision of relief materials in emergencies, urging residents in high-risk zones to cooperate fully as the government begins assessments and designs interventions.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Infratructre, Lands and Housing, Engr. Abiola Olawoye stated that the state government has approved a N3.5 billion counterpart fund for Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) in the State.
Abiola noted that this financial commitment underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s drive to enhance the state’s physical infrastructure and environmental resilience.
He noted that the Executive Council also directed the Ministry of Infrastructure to embark on a state-wide inspection of roads across all 18 local government areas to identify those in dire need of repair.
“As part of the process, engineers will conduct hydraulic designs to assess water flow volumes and improve drainage systems. Our people must be patient, we are working to build lasting structures, not just quick fixes”, he stressed.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro noted that Prince Olusola Joseph Ajaka has been approved as the pioneer Gbogunro of Idi-Ogba Alagbon in Ilaje Local Government and Prince Isiaka Oseni as the new Alale of Akungba Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government of Ondo State.
He revealed that the two stools were approved by the State Executive Council after due process have been observed.
