In a significant milestone in the fight against drug trafficking, NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) announced the arrest of over 50,000 drug offenders, including 46 barons, with 9,000 successfully convicted. This achievement, coupled with the seizure of more than 7,561 tonnes of illicit substances in the past 38 months, sends a clear message to drug cartels that Nigeria is committed to ending their criminal activities.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of a new operational facility donated by the UK government in Lagos, Marwa expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing its vital role in enhancing the agency’s capabilities in combating substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

The newly commissioned facility represents not just a physical structure but a symbol of the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the UK in the global fight against drug trafficking. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, it will serve as a crucial hub for data analysis and strategic planning to disrupt drug trafficking networks.

Marwa praised the collaboration between the two nations, citing significant reforms and achievements within the NDLEA over the past three years. He highlighted the agency’s unwavering commitment to accountability and deterrence, evidenced by the high number of arrests, convictions, and drug seizures.

While acknowledging the contribution of British officials, Marwa called for further strengthening of the partnership to intensify efforts against drug trafficking and organized crime. He emphasized the ongoing nature of the battle against illicit drugs and urged renewed determination in building a safer future.

British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Jonny Baxter, reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting NDLEA and Nigeria in tackling the global drug trade. He emphasized the need for continued cooperation and collaboration in addressing this pervasive issue.
