A worker attached to the Works Department of Akoko South-East Local Government, Mr Towolawi Joel B., has won a brand-new car at a raffle organised by the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees as part of its 2026 Week celebration in Ondo State.
The raffle was one of the major attractions of the three-day programme held in Owo, drawing excitement from participants and underscoring the union’s emphasis on workers’ welfare and motivation.
Two other participants also emerged winners in the draw. Mrs Adenle Ronke of Odigbo Local Government won a motorcycle, while Mr Olafusi Ilemobayo of Irele Local Government went home with a large deep freezer.
Speaking during the programme, the Ondo State NULGE President, Comrade Fredrick Akinrinlola, reviewed the achievements of his leadership over the past two and a half years.
Akinrinlola said the progress recorded was made possible by the cooperation of NULGE members in the state’s 18 local government areas and four allied boards, as well as the support received from the government and other stakeholders.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his administration’s interventions in matters relating to the welfare, career development and working conditions of local government employees.
The union leader listed regular staff promotions, the provision of official vehicles for principal officers and sponsorship of local and international workshops among the measures introduced to improve the efficiency and professional development of workers.
He also announced that outstanding leave bonus arrears had been settled, adding that steps had been taken towards the payment of the 2026 leave bonus.
Akinrinlola identified the approval and consolidation of Grade Level 17 for Heads of Local Government Administration as a major breakthrough for the service, saying the development would enhance recognition and provide a clearer career path for the affected officers.
He said the union had equally secured staff buses for its 22 branches across the state, thereby easing transportation challenges and improving operational activities.
According to him, capacity-building seminars had been organised for Directors who head various departments, while the salaries of local government health workers were reviewed upwards because of their importance to healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
He added that Information Officers had been equipped with video and still cameras, among other tools, to strengthen the documentation and dissemination of information from the local governments.
The NULGE president also cited the establishment and chartering of the Ondo State Local Government Staff Training School branch, with a democratically elected pioneer leadership, as another significant achievement.
He said the union further facilitated the implementation of career elongation for Executive Officers, Technical Officers and Confidential Secretaries who possess university degrees.
Akinrinlola noted that the policy had opened up fresh career opportunities for the affected employees and contributed to improved morale within the service.
He maintained that the gains recorded by the union were the result of collaboration between organised labour, government officials and other stakeholders.
The NULGE president commended the Governor’s Special Adviser on Special Duties and Union Matters, Comrade Bola Taiwo, for his accessibility and role in fostering cordial relations between the government and workers.
He also praised the Ondo State Local Government Service Commission, under its Permanent Secretary and Acting Chairman, Prof Bayo Ilawole, for its cooperation on issues concerning employees’ welfare and professional advancement.
Akinrinlola acknowledged the contributions of local government chairmen, union executives, members of the State Administrative Council and branch leaders to the development and stability of the local government service.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Aiyedatiwa, Taiwo commended NULGE for maintaining a peaceful relationship with the state government.
He described Akinrinlola’s leadership as responsible, noting his efforts to effectively communicate workers’ demands and concerns to the government.
Ilawole, in his remarks, described the Grade Level 17 consolidation for Heads of Local Government Administration as an important development that would contribute to the strengthening of the local government system.
A former NULGE National President, Dr Deji Akinwalere, also praised the Ondo State chapter for its progress, attributing the development to effective leadership.
The ceremony was attended by government officials, union executives and other stakeholders, including Dr Olubunmi Eniayewu, Dr I.D. Fashina, Dr Tunde Monehin, Executive Chairmen of Ilaje and Owo Local Government Areas, and other senior officials of the local government service.
