The Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, Prince Segun Oduntan, has pledged support for the newly elected leadership of the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria, calling on the association to uphold professionalism, ethical journalism and balanced reportage in the maritime sector.
Oduntan made the pledge on Wednesday while receiving the President of MARAN, Oluyinka Onigbinde, alongside members of the association’s executive council during a courtesy visit.
Speaking during the meeting, the ANLCA vice president described the emergence of the new leadership as an opportunity to reposition the association and strengthen confidence in maritime journalism.
He urged the executives to remain committed to unity, integrity and responsible journalism, stressing that the media plays a strategic role in shaping narratives within the maritime industry.
According to him, journalists must avoid sensationalism, blackmail and unverified reports capable of tarnishing the image of individuals and institutions.
Oduntan said practitioners should prioritise truth, fairness and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, noting that the credibility of journalism depends largely on adherence to ethical standards.
He also expressed concern over what he described as the gradual decline of investigative and developmental journalism within the maritime sector.
The ANLCA chieftain recalled a period when newspapers and specialised maritime publications were widely respected for credible and impactful reports, urging journalists to work towards restoring the profession’s integrity.
Oduntan further warned against internal rivalry and division within the association, noting that leadership often comes with disagreements and distractions.
“Leadership requires patience, wisdom and the ability to accommodate differing opinions. You may not have everybody on the same page, but what is important is to remain focused on the vision and move the association forward,” he said.
He also cautioned journalists against being used as tools for personal or political battles, insisting that responsible journalism must always be guided by facts and objectivity.
Oduntan, however, assured the new MARAN leadership of his support in efforts aimed at repositioning the association and fostering a stronger relationship between maritime journalists and stakeholders in the industry.
Responding, the MARAN President, Oluyinka Onigbinde, thanked Oduntan for his support, advice and encouragement.
He assured that the new executive would prioritise ethical journalism, professionalism and constructive engagement with stakeholders across the maritime sector.
The visit, according to MARAN, formed part of the association’s ongoing consultations with key industry stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and promote professionalism in Nigeria’s maritime industry.
