Ondo govt revisits Owena dam, promises improved water supply

The Ondo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa, has reiterated its commitment to providing safe and potable water for residents of the State.

This was made known by the Hon. Commissioner for Water Resources, Public Sanitation and Hygiene, Hon. Sunday Akinwalire, during his inspection visit to Water projects and facilities in the Central Senatorial District of the State at the weekend.

Governor Aiyedatiwa had ordered all relevant government agencies to introduce necessary measures and expertise for the provision of potable water from the facility and many others in the State, within the shortest period of time.

The Owena Multipurpose Dam in Ifedore Local Government area of the State, was the first point of call. The construction of Owena Multipurpose Dam, with 36 million cube reservoir capacity, began in November 1998, completed 2014 and was put to test and ever since, efforts have been on, to ensure that the facility is in full operation.

Other places that were visited included Owena Igbara Oke/Igbara Odo water supply scheme and Owena Ondo Dam.

The Commissioner went round the water projects in company of some principal officers in the ministry, including the Administrative Secretary, Mrs Victory Adetoye, the General Manager, Water Corporation, Engr. Remigius Ogunjobi, the Resident Engineer, Oluwole Samuel and others.

According to the Engineer, the Owena Dam, which is about 27 meters deep, has the capacity of providing potable water, as well as serving irrigation and power generation purposes.

While reacting, the Commissioner, Hon. Sunday Akinwalire, said Governor Aiyedatiwa directed that the needed necessary attention should be given to the project and the efforts are now in moton.

He stressed that thousands of households are expected to benefit from the project as soon as possible, giving the assurance of government’s commitment to the well-being of the people of the State.
