Nigeria Unveils NIWAD 1.0 to Drive Circular Economy, Improve Waste Management

Nigeria’s waste management sector received a boost on March 30, 2026, with the unveiling of the Nigerian Waste Management Directory (NIWAD) 1.0, a digital platform designed to connect users with recycling, upcycling, and waste management service providers nationwide.

The initiative, developed by Plogging Nigeria in partnership with the Embassy of Sweden in Nigeria, was launched at the Swedish Embassy Residence in commemoration of the International Day of Zero Waste.

The event drew diplomats, government officials, and industry stakeholders who examined practical solutions to the country’s waste management challenges.

Described as a central hub for waste services, the platform provides a simplified means for individuals and organisations to locate service providers across the recycling value chain, thereby improving access and coordination within the sector.

Speaking at the event, Sweden’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Anna Westerholm, praised Plogging Nigeria for championing the initiative, describing NIWAD as “an important milestone” in the country’s development.

She noted that the platform would enhance transparency, promote informed decision-making, and unlock economic opportunities within Nigeria’s circular economy.

She further commended the organisation for driving a youth-led solution and reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to supporting sustainability initiatives and strengthening collaboration in Nigeria.

Earlier, the Operations Director of Plogging Nigeria, Ramat Jadesola Owolabi, outlined the organisation’s mission, after which the Executive Director, Mayokun Iyaomolere, formally unveiled the platform and demonstrated its functionality as a nationwide digital directory for waste management services.

During a panel session, stakeholders highlighted the platform’s potential to address data gaps in the sector.

The Acting Director of Solid Waste Management at the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, Atiku Abubakar Abdullah, described NIWAD as a practical solution that would improve coordination and tracking of activities within the industry.

Also speaking, the Secretary of the Recyclers Association of Nigeria, Cajetan Okeke, said the platform provides a framework for tackling climate change through improved waste management practices, while Daniel Oladoja of the Global Strategic Communications Council stressed the role of effective communication in strengthening the waste value chain.

Looking ahead, the Administrative Director of Plogging Nigeria, Ayodeji Omilabu, unveiled plans for NIWAD 2.0, seeking support to raise $50,000 to expand data collection and deepen insights into the waste sector.

The initiative also received commendation from the Ambassadors of Finland and Norway, who noted that the platform offers clarity on the viability and operations of recycling activities in Nigeria.

The launch of NIWAD 1.0 marks a significant collaborative effort aimed at advancing sustainable waste management and promoting a circular economy in Nigeria.
