Governor of Ondo State, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has described elder statesman and foremost Afenifere leader, Bashorun Sehinde Arogbofa, as a symbol of integrity and principled leadership, as he marked his 87th birthday.
Governor Aiyedatiwa made the remarks at a book launch to the 87th birthday celebration of the elder statesman, held at Obafemi Awolowo hall, Federal University of Technology, Akure.
The governor said the occasion was not merely a celebration of age, but a recognition of a life that has evolved into “an institution in itself,” noting that Arogbofa’s legacy transcends personal achievements to reflect a broader contribution to the political, cultural and moral history of the Yoruba people.
He described the octogenarian as a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, stressing that his role over the decades has been both foundational and directional.
“In the architecture of our democratic journey, Baba Arogbofa has been a pillar and a compass, steady in conviction and consistent in service,” Aiyedatiwa said.
Highlighting the significance of the book presentation, the governor said documenting Arogbofa’s journey was essential to preserving the intellectual foundation of Yoruba political consciousness, particularly its emphasis on social justice, equity and the welfare of the common man.
He also acknowledged Bashorun Arogbofa’s long-standing association with the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo, noting that his years of service within progressive political movements helped sustain institutional memory, discipline and ideological clarity.
According to the Governor, Baba Arogbofa has, over the years, demonstrated that public service can be anchored on principle, and that leadership can be firm, fair and devoid of bitterness.
“For decades, he has shown that activism can be refined by intellect, that leadership can be fair without compromise, and that age can deepen relevance rather than diminish it,” he added.
Speaking further, the governor described respected elders like Arogbofa as part of the “moral infrastructure” of society, whose presence helps to guide leaders and hold them accountable.
He noted that their scrutiny and counsel serve as a constant reminder for those in government to act with responsibility and integrity.
“When you have elders of conscience observing and evaluating your decisions, you are compelled to reflect and strive to do what is right,” he said, adding that such guidance has positively influenced his own approach to governance.
Govenor Aiyedatiwa expressed appreciation to Arogbofa for his decades of service, mentorship and unwavering commitment to ideals, noting that he has remained steadfast even in periods when compromise would have been easier.
“At 87, you have shown that relevance is not measured by noise but by depth, not by years lived but by values sustained,” the governor said.
He prayed for continued strength, wisdom and good health for the elder statesman, while urging younger generations to emulate his discipline, courage and dedication to justice.
“On behalf of the government and people of Ondo State, I celebrate you, salute your scholarship and thank God for your life. May your wisdom continue to illuminate our path,” he concluded.
Earlier in his review, Prof. Femi Mimiko described the publication as a thought-provoking and well-researched work that addresses key issues in society.
He noted that the author carefully examined themes of growth, leadership, and human development, while maintaining a simple and engaging writing style.
According to him, the book stands out for its relevance in today’s world, offering practical insights for readers across different backgrounds.
The event had in attendance; The Secretary to the State Government, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti; Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Olusegun Odusola, represented by Justice Adegboyega Adebusoye; Executive Director of Corporate Services, NDDC, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde; Nigeria Ambassador to Russia, Ambassador Olusola Iji; Traditional Rulers; Bishop of Akure Anglican Diocese and Archbishop of Ondo Ecclesiastical Province, Rev’d.
