Ondo State House of Assembly has called on the executive and legislative arm of Ilaje Local Government to sheath their sword and allow peace to reign in the interest of the masses.
The House observed that what happened between both parties was a communication gap.
The leadership of the House led by the Speaker, Rt Hon.Bamidele Oleyelogun in its resolution during a peace meeting with the leaders of the local government affirmed that by virtue of Section 33 of the Ondo State Local Government (Amendment) Law, 2007, the House of Assembly is empowered to investigate the conduct of affairs of any officer, authority or person in the employment of any Local Government within the State.
The House therefore stated that Section 34(2) of the Law categorical states that the House of Assembly is not precluded from imposing sanctions as considered necessary to restore accountability, transparency and good governance in any Local Government in the State.
The House of Assembly who commended the Councilors for upholding democracy at their various Wards sought for maximum cooperation between the Legislative and Executive Arm of Government
the House as part of its resolution noted that the action taken on the 25th of January, 2023 by the Councilors in Ilaje Local Government by suspending the Chairman of the Council and putting in place interim did not follow due process and is hereby declared null and void.
It added that subsequent dispute between the Chairman and Councilors of any of the 18 Local Governments should be forwarded to the House of Assembly for necessary action/resolution
That the House will not hesitate to impose sanctions considered necessary to restore peace and good governance in Ilaje and any other Local Government in the State if the need arises.
The House said training of the Councillors should be encouraged and therefore directed the Clerk of the House, Barrister Benjamin Jaiyeola to act accordingly and communicate to all local governments Chairmen to appear before the House on Thursday this week by 10:00 am.
The Chairman of Ilaje local Government, Hon. Olamigoke Jatuwase stated that they came to the House of Assembly due to a misunderstanding that happened between the executives and the legislative arm of the local government.
He commended the leadership of the House for demonstrating a strict experience in conflict management with the way and manner the whole things was handled.
“As properly advised by the Speaker, it was identified that communication gap caused the issue and I think we’ll be closer now, we will continue to engage ourselves reasonably and we will communicate appropriately. Governance will now be more properly deployed in Ilaje local government.That gap will definitely be closed”,he assured.
Hon. Bosede Zachariah who is the leader of the Council while speaking on behalf of other Councillors said she was satisfied with the resolution of the House of Assembly.
