Ondo govt strengthens education data management, trains stakeholders on BEMIS

By Tolulope Eniola

The Ondo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the education sector through improved data management, describing education as a critical foundation for sustainable development.

This formed the focus of a stakeholders’ sensitisation programme on Basic Education Data Entry for the 2024, 2025 and 2026 academic sessions, held at Saint James CAC Caring Heart Mega Primary School, Irowo, Akure.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, said accurate and reliable data remains essential for effective planning, policy formulation and the overall improvement of the education system.

Represented by the Director of Inspectorate and Quality Assurance, Prince Olu Obajulaye, the commissioner noted that the Basic Education Management Information System (BEMIS) would enable authorities to track enrolment, monitor teacher performance and manage infrastructure across schools.

He added that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s education reforms under the DOTS agenda and supports the OUR EASE policy thrust of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s administration.

Ajibefun stressed that the government would continue to invest in the renovation of existing schools, construction of new facilities and provision of a conducive learning environment, while urging stakeholders to support efforts aimed at ensuring access to quality education for all children in the state.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Rt. Hon. Victor Olabimtan, said the state would sustain efforts to improve data management through effective implementation of BEMIS.

Represented by Princess Olufunmilayo Ademulegun-Brown, he commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for approving counterpart funding required to access intervention funds from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), noting that the move has enhanced the development of basic education in the state.

Also speaking, the UBEC State Coordinator, Mrs. Olanike Adams, urged participants to take the data entry exercise seriously by ensuring proper documentation and collaboration among stakeholders.

The Permanent Secretary of SUBEB, Princess Abike Bayo-Ilawole, emphasised the need for synergy among stakeholders, noting that accurate and timely data submission would significantly improve planning and policy implementation.

Delivering a technical presentation, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr. Ayodele Akanle, described BEMIS as a comprehensive digital platform developed to collect, analyse and manage education data nationwide.

He explained that the system covers Early Childhood Care Development and Education, primary and junior secondary schools, and is designed to enhance efficiency in school administration, data reporting and infrastructure assessment.

The training programme is scheduled to run from March 24 to March 26, 2026, across all 18 local government areas of the state, where designated Data Officers will receive hands-on training on the use of the platform.

Stakeholders are expected to further sensitise schools and ensure compliance with guidelines to guarantee accurate and timely data submission.
