The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Widescope International Logistics Limited, Dr Segun Alade Musa, has urged the newly elected executives of the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria to sustain the association’s reputation as a credible voice in the nation’s maritime sector.
Musa gave the charge on Tuesday in Lagos when the newly inaugurated MARAN executive council, led by its President, Olayinka Onigbinde, paid him a courtesy visit as part of its post-election stakeholder consultations.
Speaking during the visit, the logistics expert emphasised the important role the association has continued to play in shaping conversations within Nigeria’s maritime and logistics industry.
According to him, MARAN has remained relevant over the years through its commitment to professionalism, balanced reportage and constructive engagement among operators, regulators and media practitioners.
“MARAN has always occupied a unique position in the maritime industry. It is not just an association of journalists; it is a platform that has contributed immensely to the growth of the sector through informed reportage and stakeholder engagement,” he said.
Musa noted that his relationship with the association dated back several years to his early days in the industry, particularly during his tenure as Chairman of the NAGAFF Airport Chapter.
He recalled that MARAN provided him with opportunities to engage industry stakeholders and contribute to policy discussions through its roundtable sessions and maritime programmes.
“I am particularly attached to MARAN because the association gave me the opportunity to interact with stakeholders and project ideas at a time when we were championing important conversations in the industry,” he added.
The Widescope boss also reflected on his participation as a guest speaker at one of the association’s major industry events held in Ibadan more than a decade ago, where discussions focused on Inland Container Depots and port development initiatives.
Commending the association for maintaining its relevance over the years, Musa described the recent election that produced the new executive council as one of the most peaceful and organised exercises witnessed in the maritime sector in recent times.
He said the smooth transition demonstrated the level of maturity, unity and institutional stability MARAN had built over the years.
The logistics entrepreneur also applauded the decision of the newly elected executives to immediately commence consultations with stakeholders across the maritime industry, describing the move as a sign of responsible leadership and inclusiveness.
“You can see that this administration understands the importance of partnership. For the entire executive to embark on this visit shortly after the election speaks volumes about their commitment to inclusiveness and industry collaboration,” he stated.
Musa assured the association of his continued support and urged the leadership to uphold the ethics and professionalism that have distinguished MARAN in the Nigerian media space.
He stressed that a vibrant maritime media remained critical to national economic growth, especially as conversations around trade facilitation, shipping development, port efficiency and regional integration continue to gain prominence.
The visit ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to stronger collaboration aimed at promoting growth in the maritime sector and deepening the relationship between industry stakeholders and the media.
